About

What is En-tsugi?
Yobitsugi is an old Japanese technique of putting together shards from different, unrelated vessels and binding them into one with a seam of gold. From this craft, our brand, En-tsugi was born.
Each En-tsugi piece begins with an antique Japanese vessel — mainly from the Edo to the Shōwa era (18c-early 20c)— joined with fragments such as sea glass and sea pottery, bound in gold and sometimes finished with raden (mother-of-pearl inlay) and maki-e (gold lacquer art). Things born in different eras and different places meet along a golden seam and become a single, unique landscape. From something discarded, almost forgotten, we tie a new En(縁)— a new bond.
The seams are not scars to hide, but a landscape (keshiki) to admire, traced in gold. One of a kind: a small object, a tray, a piece to keep close, made to be looked at and lived with.
Please note: En-tsugi pieces are made as objects for display. Because they use sea glass and sea pottery of unknown origin, they are not guaranteed to be food-safe and are not intended for use with food.
En-tsugi is created by RESTAURER — a kintsugi and restoration studio in Setagaya, Tokyo (M&I Co., Ltd.).

On a base of Edo-period antique Imari sometsuke (blue-and-white), a Meiji-era colored-porcelain shard and sea glass — glass that traveled the ocean to a beach — are rejoined by the "yobitsugi" technique with seams of gold. The auspicious pine–bamboo–plum motif in cobalt blue meets the vivid color shard and golden seams: pieces of different eras and origins, brought together into a single quiet landscape. Each piece arrives in its own paulownia (kiri) box, with a bilingual provenance card describing the era and origin of every fragment — a complete set that makes a memorable gift. ・Materials: Edo-period antique Imari (blue-and-white) / a Meiji-era colored shard / sea glass / finished in pure gold & natural urushi lacquer / adhesive: AKEMI (Germany), EU food-contact compliant (EC 1935/2004) ・Size: approx. 11.8 cm dia. × 3 cm high — one of a kind ・Includes: dedicated paulownia (kiri) box & bilingual provenance card ・For display, or as a small tray / catch-all dish Made as an object for display. The adhesive is food-contact compliant, but as the piece contains antique and sea-found fragments, overall food safety is not guaranteed; not intended for food use (use at your own discretion). Care: Not dishwasher/microwave safe. Do not expose to water hotter than 100°C. Do not scrub with hard objects/brushes (can wear the gold). Wash gently by hand with a soft sponge and mild detergent. Do not soak for more than 3 hours (can weaken the lacquer).
